Prosthetics Specialty Programs
Upper Limb
Mary Free Bed specializes in upper extremity care at the partial hand, transradial, transhumeral, and shoulder disarticulation levels. A prosthetic clinician is responsible for recommending a prosthetic device through a full assessment of the amputee’s activities, range of motion, and muscle strength. Depending on the results, either a cable-activated, a myoelectric, or a cosmetic prosthesis will be prescribed.
Lower Limb
As a prosthetic provider, Mary Free Bed's O&P services include prosthetic evaluations, fabrication, fitting and instruction, adjustments, and repairs. Our prosthetics staff consists of eight American board-certified practitioners as well as four registered technicians who have a combined 75 years' experience in all amputation levels and needs. Our clinical staff provides lower limb care at the transfemoral, transtibial, Symes, and hip disarticulation levels.
C-Leg
Mary Free Bed O&P's clinical staff has experience and training with the C-Leg. The C-Leg is a microprocessor knee unit that provides microprocessor swing and stance phase control and customized settings. The efficiency of the C-Leg's swing phase dynamics, even at varying walking speeds and on uneven terrain, provides a more secure, natural, and efficient gait. In addition, the clinical staff also specializes in fitting and aligning the Compact microprocessor knee unit, also manufactured by Otto Bock. The Compact is a microprocessor unit that provides patients with microprocessor stance stability only. This knee is indicated for patients who have low to moderate activity levels.
Clinics
Mary Free Bed Prosthetics also specializes in providing care to patients through an adult amputee clinic. The clinic team comprises a rehabilitation registered nurse, physical or occupational therapist, physiatrist (doctor specializing in physical medicine), and certified prosthetist. Each member is available to evaluate the patient and his or her prosthetic needs.
Pediatrics
Prosthetic clinicians at Mary Free Bed provide care for pediatric patients through the Center for Limb Differences Clinic. The center provides care to infants, children, and teens with hand, foot, and limb differences. The staff comprises a rehabilitation RN, physical and occupational therapists, orthopedic surgeon, certified prosthetist, nutritionist, and social worker. Individual members of the clinic are available for evaluating and providing ongoing patient care.
MAS Socket Design
Mary Free Bed's clinical staff specializes in the MAS socket design. The MAS socket was first introduced by Marlo Ortiz, a prosthetist and engineer. He developed this transfemoral (AK) socket design to contain the ischium and medial aspect of the ischial ramel complex within the socket. The new design allows patients to sit more comfortably and provides greater range of motion. Containing the bony structures in the socket provides more stability than other traditional sockets. With its easily concealed trim lines, the MAS socket design is recognized for its cosmetic appearance.
