Bikes for the Rest of Us
Bikes for the Rest of Us is a free event focused on recreational cycling for children and adults with special needs. The event highlights a variety of special cycling equipment demonstrated by local and regional bike shops, DME suppliers, and manufacturers. Each participant is preregistered and matched with a volunteer therapist who then assists in matching physical needs with the most appropriate biking equipment. OrthoSEAT therapists are involved in the planning, evaluations, bike modifications, and fitting process for the bikes.
Bikes for the Rest of Us is held on a Saturday morning near the end of April in the Mary Free Bed parking ramp and at the Mary Ives Hunting Center at 360 Lafayette Street SE. Please check the main Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital website in late January for the exact date and preregistration information.
Recycled Cycles
Recycled bikes are also available at the event. Those who've outgrown previous bikes are encouraged to bring their old bike to match with someone new!
Funding Assistance
Adapted bikes can range in cost from $150 to $4,000. Funding assistance is available by filling out an application at the event, which is considered along with physical needs and skills and financial need. Partial funding is most common, with the applicant also funding a portion of the bike.
